Rain in Romagna:
what to do nearby

Sooner or later it happens, even in July. Eleven indoor places, starting with the closest.

The rule that works: the heavier the rain, the farther from the sea you should go. On the sand there's nothing to do in the rain; twenty minutes inland there's half of Italy's history under a roof.

The three we'd choose

With children: the Cattolica Aquarium

Thirty-four minutes, mostly indoors, and it takes 2 to 4 hours: exactly the length of a downpour. Sharks, penguins, jellyfish, otters, reptiles. You can bring a packed lunch; there are gazebos and tables.

It's also the right answer to the opposite problem: the day when it's too hot to stay on the beach.

With teens: the caves of Santarcangelo

Seventeen minutes. Beneath the village there are over 150 caves, tunnels and galleries carved into sandstone: a second underground city. They were used to store wine and during the war they were air-raid shelters; the origin of the oldest is unknown.

Two things to know beforehand: you can enter only with a guide and by reservation, and below it's a constant 13 degrees: you'll need a sweatshirt even in August. The tour lasts from 50 minutes to an hour and a quarter.

If you have a stroller, or someone who walks with difficulty, the archaeological area route is not accessible, while the public cave itself is. Better to ask when you book.

For adults: the Biblioteca Malatestiana in Cesena

Twenty-three minutes. It's a 15th-century humanist library that has come down to us intact: the desks, the codices and the chains that fasten the books to the lecterns are the originals.

It's inscribed in the UNESCO register «Memory of the World». It lasts an hour.

What to keep for another day

Water parks — Aquafan, Atlantica, Mirabeach — are outdoors, and in the rain many of the rides close. Keep them for the first sunny day. Mirabilandia has a bad-weather guarantee if you buy the ticket in advance.

San Marino you keep for a clear day: what makes it up there is the view from Mount Titano, and with low clouds you do not get it.

From here, rain is just a change of plan

You go out anyway: ten minutes away there is the covered Maritime Museum, and under Santarcangelo it does not rain.
