Cesenatico in one day,
from the canal to the sea
It's not just any seaside town: it has a straight canal running through the houses, with historic boats in it. The rest of the day revolves around that.
The Porto Canale and the boats
The heart of Cesenatico is the canal. Not a side harbor like elsewhere: a canal that runs straight into town, with houses on both sides and boats moored in the middle.
Its layout is linked to the survey that Leonardo da Vinci made of these coasts in 1502, when he worked as a military engineer for Cesare Borgia. The drawing from that survey still exists.
The boats with the colorful sails moored in the innermost stretch aren't a tourist prop: they are the floating section of the Museo della Marineria, traditional Upper Adriatic craft preserved in the water. The sail colors weren't decoration but identification: they let people on shore recognize who the returning boat belonged to.
It's the spot worth reaching around sunset: the low light on the water and the sails is why this place ends up in every photo — including the painting hanging above our sofa.
The Museo della Marineria
It has two parts: the floating one, meaning the boats in the canal, and the on land one, indoors. Together they tell how people sailed and fished here before engines.
It's one of the few things to do in Cesenatico that works even in the rain: if the day turns bad, this still works.
The fish market and the daily catch
Cesenatico is a working fishing port, not just a tourist one. The Adriatic fish you buy here is the same you'll eat in the area's restaurants: oily fish, sardoncini, saraghina, cuttlefish.
If you're in an apartment with a kitchen — and this is exactly when a kitchen helps — buying fish here and cooking it in the evening costs a fraction of dinner out, and you'll eat better.
The weekly market in Cesenatico is on Friday, year-round, in two areas of the center. It comes with traffic changes: if you arrive by car on Friday morning, expect a few detours.
Marco Pantani
Cesenatico was the town of Marco Pantani, and the monument dedicated to him is on the seafront. Several of the area's cycling routes start there: it's the natural meeting point for riders.
The Nove Colli also starts from Cesenatico, the granfondo that every year brings thousands of cyclists here. If you happen to come that weekend, you'll know before you arrive: the town fills up.
The beach, if there's time
Cesenatico is Blue Flag 2026 for Levante (Valverde-Villamarina) and for the Zadina Ponente shoreline. Fine sand, shallow waters, well-equipped beach clubs.
If you're going for the day, though, the tip is the opposite of the obvious: do the beach elsewhere and Cesenatico in the afternoon. Beaches are everywhere; port canals with historic boats, just one.
How to plan the day
From Gatteo it's 11.5 km and fourteen minutes. This is the day that works best:
- Morning — beach in Gatteo a Mare or Villamarina, where parking takes less effort.
- Lunch — at home, or fish bought at the port.
- Mid-afternoon — arrive in Cesenatico as the heat eases.
- Late afternoon — Museo della Marineria and a stroll along the canal.
- Sunset — the boats, the light, the photos.
- Evening — dinner in the center or head back.
At Christmas the canal hosts the Presepe della Marineria: the statues are set up on the historic boats. It's why this place is worth a visit in winter too.

With parking right downstairs and a kitchen for the port's fish. And the port-canal painting hangs above the sofa: Massimiliano chose it long before this site existed.
